The Meal Is Already Paid For

Galatians 5:4

Scripture "You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace." — Galatians 5:4

Reflection

Picture sitting down at a restaurant and finding out, halfway through the meal, that someone already paid your tab. The waiter tells you it's covered. Walked out the door. Taken care of. The only honest response is to say thank you and eat.

But some of us can't do that. We pull out our wallet anyway. We insist on leaving money on the table, like the gift wasn't real unless we matched it somehow. We don't trust that someone would just cover us for nothing.

That's what a lot of us do with grace. Jesus paid the bill in full. The Bible says we're dead to sin, the debt is settled, there's nothing left to owe. And we say amen to that on Sunday — then spend Monday through Saturday trying to earn back what was never ours to earn in the first place. More devotion. More rule-keeping. More proving.

I know this one from the inside. I'm in a season right now where there's no job title to point to, no church staff badge, no résumé line that says I'm doing enough. And the temptation is to work twice as hard at being "spiritual" to make up for what I've lost — as if God's love for me dims when my calendar is empty. That's the same wallet-pulling-out move. It insults the gift.

Galatians doesn't soften this. It says trying to be justified by the law doesn't make you extra devoted — it alienates you from Christ. You can't half-receive a finished gift. Either the meal's paid for, or it isn't.

Question Where are you still reaching for your wallet on a debt Jesus already settled?

Prayer Jesus, thank you for paying what I could never cover. Forgive me for the places I've kept trying to earn what you already gave. Teach me to receive it — fully, without apology — so my life can finally run on gratitude instead of proving. Amen.
